Mixtape Music Mondays: Peaking Lights - ‘936’
* PEAKING LIGHTS - ‘936’ *
facebook.com/PeakingLights
Husband and Wife duos of late have tended to produce twee folksy pop, Peaking Lights are breaking that trend. Their sound is ambient and psychedelic with a dub edge, laid back and hazy, sun-speckled and nostalgic. The instruments evoke another era whilst the production remains resolutely modern, layers of warped sounds build over the percussive rhythms whilst the reverb-affected vocals wash over the top. Every listen brings something new to your attention but despite all the elements in play, this is a very light and airy sounding record. It isn’t a beach record in the classic sense but it is one that will transport you somewhere sunnier, somewhere you will want to go and lose yourself in

Mixtape Recommends: ‘Hey Sparrow’, wonderfully wobbly, woozy, wind-up psychedelic dub, ‘Tiger Eyes (Laid Back)’ and ‘Synthy’

* MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND - ‘ALL THINGS WILL UNWIND’ *
mybrightestdiamond.com
We’re very excited to bring you the new album from My Brightest Diamond. Having collaborated with Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver and David Byrne she has a remarkable musical pedigree and this, her 3rd Album, should be the one that sets her up as a leading light in that highly regarded Art-Pop world she has been a key behind-the-scenes player in of recent years. For ‘All Things Will Unwind’ she brought in collaborators of her own, the revered yMusic, an alt-classical chamber orchestra, and their orchestrations beautifully complement her operatic voice and theatrical delivery, they also give an added flourish to they imagery laden lyrics. This is an incredibly accomplished album, one of those pieces of music you feel richer and smarter for having listened to. The best thing is it does this without trying to show you how smart it is

JULIANNA BARWICK RELEASES ‘THE MATRIMONY REMIXES’ OUT TOMORROW, OCTOBER 4
FEATURING REMIXES FROM ‘THE MAGIC PLACE’ BY DIPLO, PRINCE RAMA AND MORE
The Matrimony Remixes takes Julianna Barwick’s acclaimed early 2011 release, The Magic Place, and puts two of its tracks into the hands of good friends. Previously having crossed paths with Julianna while both working on remixes of Radiohead’s “Reckoner,” Philadelphia-based Diplo teams up with producer Lunice to provide some deep sea beats to “Vow.” Brooklyn neighbor to Barwick, “dear friend,” and label-mate Roberto Lange takes “Vow” into the inner space of clouds. Long-time Barwick friend Bryan Doring of Alias Pail drumbreaks “Prizewinning.” Brooklyn/Boston-based sisters of the cosmos Prince Rama closes out the EP by escorting the same song into an aural Eden.
Praise for Julianna Barwick“A singer who loops and layers her own voice to form a vast one-woman chorus, Barwick belonged in the church that had been converted into a music venue for SXSW. It’s too easy to call her music a religious experience in that setting, but it sure was nice – at times overwhelmingly so.”Esquire
“There’s euphoric joy in these slow-building choral pieces that celebrates the human voice with humility — You only realize its repetitive simplicity when Barwick takes everything away and lets silence sing more than we ever thought it could.” NPR
“There’s something in her music that brings it back down to earth. It feels human, imperfect, and intimate, and the line of communication is one-to-one. Despite her music’s often epic sweep, it can feel like she is whispering in our ears. So the sense of the sublime, which permeates every note of her material, ultimately works on a humble scale.” Pitchfork [Best New Music]
“She sings the way Julee Cruise does: moving beyond language to instead weave pink clouds, paint scarcely glimpsed heavenly vistas, and infuse dim childhood memories with golden light.” Village Voice

* TEETH - ‘WHATEVER’ *
myspace.com/teethdance
There’s no other way of dressing it up, this is a loud, in-your-face, hi-energy party album. If you’ve been lucky enough to see one of their live shows you will know that Teeth are a formidable force, the stage is rarely uninvaded and the crowd are never quiet. They have now translated that vigour onto record, bringing us one of the most lively electro-dance albums we’ve heard for a long time. It’s not all rave, ‘See Spaces’ and ‘Flowers’ show a softer side, but this is an album that clearly knows it’s place and that place is fun
**********
Mixtape Recommends: ‘See Spaces’, pulsing late night dance track that drips with yearning and melancholia, ‘Pill Program’ and ‘This Time’

‘Whatever’ has been banging its way into the critics’ consciousness, see what they’ve been saying about it:
‘it’s catchy and fun, and it demands to be played at high volume’ - DiS
‘…their power and impact is punchy, punky, and never self-indulgent’ - MusicOMH
‘(This) high-BPM bouncing version of a Space Invader soundtrack is probably perfectly suited to a darkened nightclub with glow-in-the-dark graffiti on the walls’ - TLOBF
